The Three Major Filters of an Engine

2024-04-29

An engine has three filters: air, oil, and fuel. They are responsible for filtering the media in the engine's intake system, lubrication system, and combustion system.

Air Filter

The air filter is located in the engine's intake system and consists of one or several filter components used to clean the air. Its main function is to filter out harmful impurities in the air that enters the cylinder, thereby reducing early wear and tear on the cylinder, piston, piston ring, valve, and valve seat.

Oil Filter

The oil filter is located in the engine's lubrication system. Its upstream is the oil pump, and downstream is all the parts of the engine that require lubrication. Its function is to filter out harmful impurities in the oil in the oil pan, supply clean oil to the crankshaft, connecting rod, camshaft, turbocharger, piston ring, and other moving parts for lubrication, cooling, and cleaning, thereby extending the service life of these parts.

Fuel Filter

There are three types of fuel filters: diesel fuel filter, gasoline fuel filter, and natural gas fuel filter. Its function is to filter out harmful particles and moisture in the engine's fuel system, thereby protecting the oil pump nozzles, cylinder liners, and piston rings, reducing wear and tear, and avoiding clogging.
